co
r--
N
o

CHAPTER IV

STAGE ONE DEVELOPMENT AND MONITORING

'"""

The laterals were not fully installed for the 1982 irrigation season;

however, the expected lateral seepage of 2,940 acre-feet was from the

unconstructed laterals. The salt loading from laterals has been reduced

by 6,710 tons.

The first full irrigation season in which monitoring with all

the Stage One systems improvements installed can occur will be in 1983.

Data gathering will continue in 1983 with the collection of drain and

canal flow measurements, water table elevations, photographs, and water

quality data. The flow and quality data are being analyzed to quantify

the salt loading in the system. The other data provide empirical evi-

dence of effects.

Monitoring results to date provide a good check on

Stage One planning assumptions and are summarized in Table 3.

Table 3
Seepage and salt loading reductions
resulting from Stage One improvements
Salt
loading
reduction
(tons)

Seepage
reduction
(acre-feet)

Mg/L
effect at
Imperial
Dam

1981
CanatV
Lateralsl/
Total

1,370

5,420

0.55

1,370

5,420

.55

1982
Canal
Lateralsl/
Total
Long-term projected
Canal l, 290 5.290
Laterals 4,930 19,270
Total 6,220 24,560
1/ Canal lining completed in March 1981.
2/ No laterals were lined until October 1981.
3/ A portion of the lateral lining was completed
the 1982 irrigation season.

1,310
1,960
3,270

5,000
6,710
11,710

.51
.68
1.19

.53
1. 95
2.48

prior to

25
