~
r..o
C\!
o
:,

CHAPTER II

UNIT SETTING

<=:)

The average growing season is 190 days.

The coldest temperatures occur

in January and February when readings below zero are occasionally

recorded.

Precipitation throughout the area varies according to elevation.

The lower valley has an arid climate and receives less than 10 inches of

moisture annually. Higher elevations such as the Uncompahgre Plateau and

Grand Mesa receive as much as 25 to 30 inches of precipitation annually.

Precipitation in the valleys occurs mostly as summer thunderstorms and in

the higher elevations as winter snowfall.

Vegetation and wildlife

A detailed description of the valley's vegetation and wildlife is

presented in the Final Report on Flora and Terrestrial Vertebrate Studies

of the Grand Valley Unit (Ecology Consultants Incorporated, 1976).

Additional information is presented in the Environmental Assessment,

Grand Valley Unit (Bureau of Reclamation and Soil Conservation Service,

1977) and is also available in the Annual Report for the Wildlife Moni-

toring, Stage One, Grand Valley Salinity (Colorado Division of Wildlife,

1982 and 1983).

Seven general vegetation types can be classified in the Grand

Valley; these include pinyon-juniper woodland, saltbush brushlands,

sagebrush brushlands, greasewood brushlands, tamarisk shrubland, cotton-

wood woodland) and marsh.

Vegetation in the area consists of irrigated crops and interspersed

areas of native vegetation.

The native vegetation is mostly limited to

narrow bands of greasewood, cottonwood, tamarisk, and associated species;

wetland areas along the Colorado River and in agricultural areas; and

scattered tracts of greasewood interspersed among the irrigated areas.

8
