001Z13

VII. 6

Such miscellaneous items in the water budget of a lake or
reservoir generally must be estimated; conveniently, the several
estimates can be combined into a series of monthly values for net
effect of the reservoir on streamflow. Certain of the monthly net
values may be positive; other monthly values may be not only negative
but also more than gross evaporation. Generally in the Southwest the
yearly net effect Will be negative but less than gross evaporation,
which of course is negative. A suggestive example is the following
series of average monthly net effect at the previously cited Pine Flat
Reservoir, as estimated by the Corps of Engineers.

Month Gross eV~horation Net effect
(inc es) (inches)
October ~5.11 ~4.00
November -2.99 ~ .97
December ~2.30 1.27
January -1. 73 1.78
February -1.03 2.03
March ~2.44 - .92
April -3.80 "'2,77
May -6.30 -6.70
J1Ule -7.10 -7.45
July -9.82 -10.04
August. ~9.98 40,12
September -7.40 -7.11
The year -60.00 -45.00
