.

.

Survey of Present Irrigation Development
and Potentially Irrigable Areas
In Arkansas and Red River Basins of Texas

Part II

Inventory of Potential Surface Water Irrigation
Developments
Red and Arkansas River Busins
In Texas
1950

WATER SUPPLY

Water supply and quality sbldies of the Canadian and Red River
Basins in Texas have been directed mainly toward the Canadian River
development and toward possible development of Prairie Dog Town Fork near
tho mouth of Mulberry Creek. Continuing water supply studies will be
neoessary for operation of the Canadian River Project under the Canadian
River Compact which was ratified recently by Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico.

Runoff studies were initiated on Prairie Dog Town Fork with the
installation of a gage on the stream at Antelope Flats bridge near Brice in
December 14, 1938. Its.operation was continued until June 30, 1944.

Interest in project development was later revived in connection
with storage for municipal wator use and both runoff and quality stations
were established at the site of the original gage on Prairie Dog Town Fork.
Their operation was continued from August 1949 to July 1951. Toward the
latter part of the record period, study of the data made it evident that
the quality of Prairie Dog Town Fork was unsuitable for either municipal or
irrigation uses and that waters of Mulberry Creek would be equally unsuit-.
able for municipal uses, but would probably be tolerable for irrigation use.
With these facts evident, it was decided to discontinue operation of the
stations.

No water supply studies have been conducted on Salt Fork of Red
River above the Oklahoma-Texas St.lte Line related to runoff. Spot sampling
of the main stem and of tributary streams for quality study was done in
June 1950. Preliminary tests of these samples indicated fair quality stream
flow could be expected above the Donley County - Collingsworth County line.
Below this line, tributary streams entering the river are more highly
mineralized and would be unsatisfactory for municipal uses.

Preliminarf analysis of spot samples of Groesbeck Creek indicates
the stream is highly mineralized perhaps consisting largely of calcium
sulphate. Similar data on Wanderers Creek indicates the stream flow is
probably of fair quality.

PeasG River watGr supply studies were initiated in 1924 with the
establishment of a gage for runoff data at State Highway Bridge #283,
8 miles north of Crowell. Its operation was discontinued on June 30, 1947,

30
