o
......
(..")
N
r:'"')
(;:)

U. S. SUPREME COURT SUIT

For more than thirty years there has been a controversy between Arizona and California as
to the rights of the people of these two states to water from the Colorado River. This con-
troversy, for the most part, arises out of conflicting interpretations by the two states of certain
basic provisions of the Colorado River Compact.

For a number of years California sought to have this water controversy with Arizona
settled by a decision of the Supreme Court, but Arizona opposed this move, In 1952, how-
ever, Arizona did an about face, and caused to be filed in the Supreme Court a suit naming
as defendants the State of California and its public water and power agencies with Colorado
River contracts for water and/or power. In this suit Arizona is seeking to obtain title to
Colorado River water supplies which would invade the established water rights of California.

The Supreme Court suit is now in progress. California welcomes the opportunity to
defend this State's rightful share of Colorado River water vitally needed to serve its homes,
farms and industries. Californians are confident that this State's Colorado River water con-
tracts, made in good faith with the Federal government, will be sustained,

COLORADO RIVER BOARD OF CALIFORNIA

The Colorado River Board of California is an official California State agency. The
Board is composed of six members appointed by the Governor. Each member of the Board
represents a California water and/or power agency with established rights on the Colorado
River, These public agencies are:

Coachella Valley County Water District
Department of Water and Power of the City of Los Angeles
Imperial Irrigation District
Palo Verde Irrigation District
San Diego County Water Authority
The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California

Under the provisions of the State law which sets forth the powers and duties of the
Colorado River Board, it has the responsibility of safeguarding and protecting the rights and
interests of the State, its agencies and citizens, in and to their contracted shares of water of the
Colorado River System.

Once more, it should be emphasized, that the Colorado River Board and the State's pub-
lic agencies with rights on the river are not seeking to obtain more water from the Colorado
River: they are dedicated to the task of safeguarding the share of Colorado River water for
which California people, through their public agencies, have long-standing contracts,

COLORADO RIVER ASSOCIATION

The Colorado River Association is a nonpartisan,
nonprofit organization of citizens from all sections of
California and from forty-three other states.
Acting in behalf of the Colorado River Boord of
California and the member agencies of that board,
the Association is carrying forward an educational pro-
gram to inform the people of the United States of

existing and proposed water and power developments
on the lower Colorado River.
Members of the Association are representatives of
business, industry, agriculture, labort the professions,
women's organizations, and numerous civic, patriotic,
educational and service groups.

[22 ]
