Also within the District are populous unincorporated areas. The District has a present
population of more than 6,000,000.

INCREASING WATER NEEDS

To meet a rapidly increasing need for Colorado River water for its homes and industries, the
Metropolitan Water District is pressing forward a program of enlarging and extending its
aqueduct system, This work calls for the expenditure of $80,000,000 for construction work,
most of which will be completed in 1956, The funds invested are being supplied by the
citizens of the Metropolitan Water District. There are no Federal subsidies involved,

Work under way includes the installation of three additional pumps at each of the
aqueduct's pumping plants, the construction of a new storage and regulating reservoir, now
in service, and the extension of distribution pipe lines to provide heavily populated areas
with adequate water supplies for fire protection and sanitary requirements, and for homes
and industries.

Only Colorado River water for which the Metropolitan Water District has a contract
dating back to 1930 will be delivered by the new delivery facilities. There is no call for
water in addition to the District's present established rights.

Parker Dam and Power Plant on the Colorado River.

[ 17]
