Gaging Stations
Heavy rains in July in the vicinity of John Martin Reservoir caused
severe damage to the Compact Gaging Station below the. Reservoir and
for several weeks, the safety of the structure was eIH.bngcred. With
the cooperation of the Corps of Engineers, rep;\irs were completed hcfore
further damage occurred.
The July floods 011 the Purgatoire River also c.:l:Uscd severe scouring
of the channel at the Compact station on this stream. When the high
water receded, the channel had moved from the right bank to the left
ba.nk of the stream and the gaging station was left ."urrounclcJ by large
deposits of sand and debris. As a temporary expedient to obtain stream-
flow records, it wire-weight gage WilS installed over the new (:hannel
and daily gage readings were obtained. Since occasional channd shifts
can be expected in the future, pbns have been nude to construct a
new station on the; left bank, leaving the right bank station ill place.
The rccoruing instrument will be moved from one structure to the othcr
as channC'1 shifts may require'.
The need still exists for radio stage-reporting equipment at the
stations measuring inflow into John Martin Rl'&::rvoir.

9.
