Implementation of the measures included in these projections will
provide better control of irrigation water and will reduce seepage from
existing earth ditches. The estimated effect of these measures on the
water and salt budgets in the valley are shown in Table 11. These
estimates are based on an average increase of 4,200 parts per million in
salt concentration of the water returning to the river and on funding
for cost-share assistance continuing at the average level of the past
six years.

Table 11 -- Annual Reductions in Seepage and Salt load
Pickup Without an Accelerated Program for
Implementation of Improvements

I tem of
Improvement

Annual
Increment 1/

ac. ft/yr.

Seepage
Maximum
Annual 2/

ac. ft/yr.

Salt load Pickup
Annual Maximum
Increment 1/ Annual 2/

tons/yr. tons/yr.

Ditch Li n i ng
& Pipelines

770

7,700

4,400

44,000

land Level ing
& Mgt. Part of the increase is attributed to emigration
of retired and semi-retired people into the valley. However, the more
significant influence on population will come from development and
exploitation of energy reSOurces as part of the nation's search for new
supplies of energy.

Currently irrigated agricultural land is being converted to residential
and urban uses at the rate of about 800 acres per year. Without extensive
development of oil shale it is estimated that an additional 8,800 acres

33

\.GO~
