BASIC MAGNESIUM PLANT

A. J. Shaver, Chtef Engineer
Colorado River Commission of Nevada

Mr. Shaver invited the group to visit the Basic Magnesium Plant
at Henderson, Nevada, as guests of the Colorado River Commission. Prior
to the tour he related the history of theiproject ,from its construction
during World War II, by the Defense PlantiCorporation, to produce metallic
magnesium, to its present status under th~ jurisdiction of the Colorado
River Commission of Colorado. A condense~ version of Mr. Shaver's remarks
follows.

Afte,r the manufacture of magnesi\lJ1l was discontinued in 1944 the
federal government attempted to lease portions of the facilities to various
industries, but the revenue derived from the small number of lessees proved
totally inadequate to maintain the establishment, so it was decided to liq-
uidate the project. Since the relativelyicheap power from Hoover Dam was
attractive to industry, and since Nevada,[tnrough the Colorado River Com-
mission had access to a large block of th~t power, it appeared that the
only means of saving the project for industrial use was for the Commission
to acquire the facilities and to dispose of them later to private interests
as opportunities developed.

A Quit Claim Deed dated June 3, 1949, transferred to the State of
Nevada the entire project comprising about 4,000 acres of land, numerous
buildings for manufacture and storage, a~inistrative and service buildings,
houses, school and hospital facilities, P9wer and water facilities, railroad
and ,other miscellaneous structures.

At present all facilities have b$en either sold Or leased with
options to purchase. The major occupants[of the project are engaged in
the manufacture of chemical and metallic wroducts, including chlorine,
caustic soda, hydrogen, benzene, hexachlo~ide and insecticides, as well
as titanium and ferromanganese.
