001897

. Sponsor an open meeting. Invite government and public officials
to participate.

. Support ADEQUATE STAFFS AND ADEQUATE FtNANCING for
[he STATE WATER POLLUTION CONTROL AUTHORITY.
Primary responsibility for water pollution control falls upon
State warer pollution control agencies. Authorities agree
chat these agencies are under staffed and under financed
for the job they have to do. Only public influence and sup.
rort will correct this situation.

. Conduce a community poll. The best way to find out what people
chink about the water problem is [0 ask them questions. FIe'"
quently, tabulated answers point up false assumptions which clue
community leaders as how to best build right accepmnce attitudes.
Groups such as Boy Scouts, Girl ScoutS, Campfire Girls,
and Future Homemakers of America may want to help. This
prevents the burden falling too heavily on anyone organiza-
tion and again involves several people in a part of the
program.

The results of this long range program will do much to create a public
consciousness about water and will manifest itself, not only in solving
today's water problems, but in planning for tomorrow's needs as well.
It can be said of our waters that the Present condition presses on the
Past and the Future on the Present.

Waving a magic wand will not solve our problem. An enlightened public
will .... fot when an intelli.gent citizenry acquires proper knowledge
about the conditions of our waters and has the proper appreciation for
[he implica[ions .... ACTION WILL FOLLOW.

5
