.'
_1,-
<:::)
'f"''; of vegetation adversely impacted in terms of reduced vigor and density by
~~ lowering the existing water table would be 11,098 acres.
;)
'":.I C. Waterfowl Production and Other Water Bird Use Losses

To determine the waterfowl production in the Closed Basin project area and the
associated loss in production caused by the project, the following calculations
(tables 5 and 6) were made:

Table 5
Summary of Ducks Produced in the Closed Basin Project Area

43,122 acres of wetlands in Closed Basin project area
- 2,235 *acres of wetlands in San Luis/Head Lakes area
40,887
x .31 ducks produced/acre of wetland (low-density area)
12,675 ducks produced/year in low-dens i ty area
+ 945 ducks produced/year in San Luis/Head Lake area
13,620 ducks produced/year in Closed Basin project area

* San Luis/Head Lake area is a high concentration area; and,
therefore, production/acre is higher and was calculated
separately from rest of project area.

Table 6
Summary of Ducks Produced on Wetlands Affected by the Project

8,262
x .31
2,561
+ 601
3,162
+ 281
3,443

acres of wetland lost (8,460 acres - 198 acres Blanca WHA)
ducks produced/acre of wetland low-density area
ducks lost
ducks lost in Blanca WHA

ducks lost in the San Luis/Head Lake wetland area
ducks lost/year with the project

This loss of waterfowl translates into the loss of about 594 hunter-days and
the loss of 1,033 birds which would have been harvested without the project.
Other water bird use losses were calculated at 40 use-days/acre/season. The
8,460 acres of wetlands impacted by the project would result in a loss of
338,400 other water bird use-days/season.

D. Fishery

Fishery impacts of the project are limited to two cold-water fishery ponds
(Mallard 4 and 5) on the Blanca WHA. These two ponds, totaling 30 surface
acres, produce about 5,251 pounds of trout annually. Water level drawdown due
to pumping would probably eliminate the trout fishery in these two ponds.

9
