".;]_, ....,)' <br />~..:::.~.....~._c~ ',l:!~t\"\- ,'j'. <br /> <br />Introduction <br /> <br />The Bureau of Reclamation's Fryingpan-Arkansas Project <br />is a transmountain diversion which supplies southeastern <br />Colorado with an impro....ed water supply for irrigation. <br />municipal and industrial use, hydroelectric power <br />generation. and recreational opportunities. The project <br />also provides flood control fOf the area and is designed to <br />maintain or improve fish and wildlife habitats. <br /> <br />The project got its name because it collects about 69,000 <br />acre.feel of water each year from the Fryingpan River <br />Basin on the western slope of the Continental Divide and <br />delivers it via the Arkansas River to water-shorl farmland <br />on the eastern slope. <br /> <br />There are two distinct areas of the project, separated by the <br />Continental Divide. whose elevation is more than 14.000 <br />leet in some places. The western slope area is located <br />within the boundaries of the White River National Forest at <br />elevations exceeding 8,000 feet. while the eastern Slope <br />portion lies in the fertile farmlands 01 the Arkansas River <br />Valley. <br /> <br />Cover <br />Ruedl Dam and Reservoir were <br />built to SIOre replacement water <br />lQf WeSlern Slope users <br /> <br />The project includes five major dams and reservoirs, 17 <br />smaller dams 10 divert water down shafts to nine tunnels <br />that feed the Arkansas River. a 200-megawatt pumped- <br />storage powerptant at the base of Colorado's highest <br />mountain. and a conduit to supply municipal water <br />systems. <br /> <br />
