Seventy-eight
persons died and damages
exceeded $19 million when
floodwater ravaged Pueblo
in 1921. In 1965, flooding in
the Fountain Creek area
east of the city produced

~

..

I

. ......~~
. . ~2

extensive damage.
Flooding was reported as
far as 90 miles downstream.

Fear of flooding has been
reduced considerably with
the construction of Pueblo
Dam and Reservoir. The
reservoir has a reserved
minimum capacity of
27,000 acre-feet for flood
water storage. The other
project reservoirs provide
incidental flood control
benefits.

Water levels in each
reservoir are carefully
controlled through
mid-summer to
accommodate runoff. Rate
of reservoirdrawdown in the
project is based on
forecasts of expected
spring runoff each year.
Projected runoff is based on
the amount of winter
snowfall.

Flood control is a major
concern of both
Reclamation and the Army
Corps of Engineers. Both
agencies cooperate with
the State Engineer to
ensure maximum
protection of communities
in the project area

20
