Public Law 91-81 (91st Congress, S. 574),
dated October 8, 1969, authorized the
Bureau of Reclamation to conduct a
feasibility investigation of the water
resources and associated problems and
needs of the Front Range Unit, Longs Peak
Division, Pick-Sloan Missouri Basin Program.
The unit is located along the eastern Front
Range of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado.

The purpose of this report is to describe the
status of the Bureau of Reclamation
investigations to date, to summarize the
information which has been obtained during
the studies, and to suggest possible
concepts for solving or alleviating the water
and associated natural resource problems of
the Front Range study area. It is hoped that
this report will be useful to the State and to

~~.
I~~,_."r<-

~
rw

I

'/~
L~~

~~~1f ~
~~1fffi@ru\N@ 1f~ @~
iocal governmental entities and others
concerned with the future development of
the Front Range.
Being concerned primarily with the irrigation
and municipal and industrial (M&I) water
problems of the area, the investigation
revealed a critical water shortage in the Coal
Creek drainage area. In discussions with the
Colorado Water Conservation Board and
based on preliminary results of studies over
the Front Range area it was decided to
prepare this status report and to change the
scope of the investigation to concentrate on
the Coal Creek area. Accordingly, the status
report describes the surface and
ground-water resources of the Front Range
area, identifies flood problems, and explores
the rapidly expanding demand for
The Front Range of Colorado
1-1
