Dallas Creek Project, Colorado (BR)

-13-

.

Ridgway Reservoir could provide an estimated 24,400 man-days of flat-water
fishing opportunities. Realization of these man-days of fishing will be
dependent upon the quality of this fishery and its ability to compete
with the several other flat-water fisheries that will be available to
the area's fishermen such as Blue Mesa, Morrow Point, Crystal, Crawford,
and Silver Jack Reservoirs (11,187 total surface acres). Colorado
Division of Wildlife expects that the Ridgway reservoir fishery
will have to be maintained by a program of annual stocking of catchable-
size fish. Biological productivity in the reservoir will be so low that
fingerling stocking would not yield a satisfactory return.

Estimated annual costs
water will be $99,300.
of benefits that could

of a catchable-size fish stocking program for this
This exceeds significantly the estimated $36,600
be gained from this fishery.

The maintenance of this type of a program will not be economically
justified, and it is suggested that this water not be stocked
under this basis. However, if as a result of public pressure, a
stocking program of this nature is required, it must be recognized
that this is a project-oriented problem and as such will be a project
responsibility for resolution.' This project responsibility could
be met by assuming the stocking program for this reservoir using
fish produced at Colorado River Storage Project, Section 8 financed
hatchery facilities.

To achieve the best possible results from this stocking program, it may
be necessary to eradicate competing nongame fish from the drainage
above Ridgway Reservoir. This will be an associated project responsi-
bility.

Dallas Divide Reservoir is at a high elevation and when at full pool,
will be an attractive area. However, at this elevation the
growing season will be short and when coupled with the fluctuation
of the water surface it is expected that the fishery will be of
mediocre quality. This fishery can probably be maintained by a
fingerling stocking program.

The re-regulating reservoirs, McKenzie and Horsefly will not be suitable
habitat for establishing a fishery.
