Area

I
II

III

IV

V

VI

-

I
i
Population growth in the 1, largest \:i ties listed above between 1940
and 19,0 was over 38 percent as compared to nearly 28 percent for the total
region. In 1940 about 32 percent of the total population resided in the
15 cities listed as compared to 34 percent in 19,0. The figures indicate
that the trend in the region has been toward concentration of population
in urban centers.

,
The changes in fam population whicn! took place between 1930 and 19,0
are evident from Table 3. All of the are~s experienced losses in farm
population during the 20-year period. Th$ regional loss was slight between
1930 and 1940 because losses in the Utah$nd Colorado areas were nearly
compensated by gains in the other areas. : However, beMen 1940 and 19,0
the farm population decreased by 1'9,000 Persona, and the decline was gen-
eral throughout the region. The farm population lost in the area ranged
from a 14.9 percent decline in the Utah area to 3:l.7 percent in the Arizona
area. The percentage decrease for the reg10n was less than one percent be-
tween 1930 and 1940, but amounted to 23.4!percent bebreen1940 and 1950.

.

- 16 -
