.

.

e

Pawer Karket Survey - Calarada River Storage Project

a part af which is used as grazing land, and large expanses af desert and
wasteland af no. determined value.

The statistics an land awnership are nat available in a farm precisely
applicable to. this pawer market region; hawever, it is estimated from Table I
that ave;' 45 percent af the regian' statal land is publicly owned.

Only abaut 2 percent af the land in the regian is irrigated althaugh
this constitutes almast 66 percent af the tatal crop land harvested.

Timber
The timber resources af the area are small when campared with tile
states af the Narthwest and ather areas where lumbering and farest praducts
canstitute an impartent part af the ecanamy. Much o.f the land in the narthern
partian af the regian that is designated as Natianal Farest is actually nat
timbered and less than half af the farested area can be considered as call'JIler-
cial timberland. The heaviest stands af timber' are in western Calarado and
Arizona. The Calarada timber includes stands af pine, spruce, and fir trees
and the lagging and sawmill aperatians are usually an a small scale far
productian af raugh mine lumber, timber, pasts, and po.les. The Arizana
timber includes stands af pine and fir and mast af the timberland is admin-
istered by state ar Federal agencies with productian generally liJni ted.to
sustained yields.

Minerals
The regian is rich in mineral resaurces af many kinds. The pracesses
af mauntain building and the farces af erosian that carved the topagraphy
af the regian e:xpased gealo.gical farmlltians in many varied condl.tians,
faci.litating the recavery af numerous minerals that have accumulated during
the ages af geo.lagical history.

The great Tri-State Caal Field af the Upper Calo.rado River Basin, in-
cluding areas in eastern Utah, western Colarado., and sauthwestern Wyaming,
constitutes approximately 25 percent af all known bituminaus caal reserves
in the United States.

In the faur-carners area af New Mexico., Colarada, Utah, and Arizana
are faund a variety af mineral depasits, particularly coal, petroleum,
natural gas, and uranium. It has been predicted that the natian's greatest
ail reserves may be fo.und in this area. Caal deposits are shallow and suit-
able far apen~pit mining. Extensive ail and natural gas reserves are known
in ather parts af New Mexico., Utah, and Co.larado., and large reserves are
available in Wyoming. Oil shale is present in large quantities in an area
running fram central Utah into. western Calarada and southern Wyaming. It
has been estimated that this shale cantains some ten times as much ail as
has been used in tile warld to. date.

- 5 -
