1959-60, with 1,970,182.2 in 1958-59., and with 1,816,782 in 1957-58,
Local production, exclusive of Colorado River water amounted to
1,561,270 acre-feet in 1960-61 as compared with 1,480,305 acre-feet
in 1959-60, with 1,535,896 in 1958-59, and with 1,430,003 in 1957-
58, In proportion to the total production the City of San Marino pro-
duced locally 99,1 percent of the total water production for the year,
only 10,1 acre-feet of Colorado River water was delivered, the first
delivery being in Septembe," 1960, There are only six of the con-
stituents that depend on the Colorado River water for the major
po..tion of their water supply, namely San Diego CW A-89,6;;,;
Coastal IIIWD-88,77D; To....ance-85.6j>,; Santa lIIonica-75,7}(,;
Pasadena-62,2'i"; and Foothill MWD-58,8'70, For the entire a..ea
of the District 7L8~" of the water comes from local production,

Table 21 shows the average total p..oduction in cubic feet pe..
Water Replenishment of Underground Basins

There is a comprehensive and continuing program being carried
out to replenish the dangerously ove..drawn underground wate..
basins in the Los Angeles and Orange Counties, This p,"og..am is
one of the most important, and until recent years, one of the most
neglected, phases of wate.. development projects to meet the re-
quirements of a rapidly growing urban and suburban population
and expanding iJldust..y,

Beginning in 194~). Coloradu Rive.. water was purehased to re-
charge the underground basin of the lowe.. Santa Ana River Valley
and since that time the Orange County Water District, with some
early assistance from the Orange County Flood Control District has
"pplied a total of 793,101 acre-feet for g..ound water recha..ge up to
June 30, 1961. Cu..rently 164,512 acre-feet were purchased for this
pUl'pORe in 1%0-61 ,md there are plans to purchase about 200,000
acre-feet during 1961-62, Increasing amounts are needed in the
following years as long as the supply is available from the Aqueduct
'IS it iR estimated that 375,000 acre-feet wil! be required to resto..e
the water levels in the basin,

Since 1954, the Los Angeles County Flood Control District has
!Jeen purchasing Colo..ado Rive.. water for spreading to the under-
ground basins in Zoue 1 south of Whittie.. Na..rows in the San
Gabriel Rive.. Valley and in Zone 2 in the West Basin area for in-
jecting to the underground aquifers to form a fresh water barrier
against salt water intrusion, During 1960-61 the..e were 143,185
acre-feet pu..chased for the underground basin in Zone 1 for a total
to date since 1954 of 528,997 acre-feet. During the year 1960-61
the..e were 4,492 acrc-feet of Colorado River water punlped into the
aquifers in Zone 2 for a total since 1954 of 29.753 acre-feet. To June
30,1961 there has been 1,351,851 acre-feet of Colorado River water
purchased and placed in the ground water basins in Orange and
Los Angeles Cou nties.
