<br />Construction wurk is covered in Chapter 4,-Construction, The
<br />"peration and maintenance of the distribution system including the
<br />District's portion of the twu San Diego Aqueducts and minOl' con-
<br />struction was performed b,y a crew of 103 men, exclusive of opera-
<br />ting personnel at the F, E. Weymouth Softening and Filtration
<br />plant at La Verne, The men were stationed at Morris Dam, Orange
<br />County, Corona DelMar, Palos Verdes, Garvey and San .Jacinto reS-
<br />ervoirs, and at Santa Ana Canyon, Eagle Rock, Rio Hondo and
<br />Rainbow control structures, with the two larger crews located at
<br />Lake Mathews and the La Verne treatment plant. Routine opera-
<br />tions ano maintenance included: Security, sy~tematic patrol of all
<br />facilities, operation and servicing of val\'€.s, meters and equipnlent,
<br />making minor repairs, cleaning and painting metal work. reading
<br />;,nd recording meter readings and temperatures of water, and eol-
<br />Ip.cting of water samples for analysis.

<br />Lake Mathews is the terminal reservoir for the Main Aqueduct
<br />and the origin of the distribution system serving must of the Dis-
<br />trict with the exception lIf the San Diego ('uunty Water Authority,
<br />whose aqueducts conned to the l\!ain Aqueduct east of Lake
<br />Mathews, On July 1, .HlfiO there were 61,071 acre-feet of Colorado
<br />River ",ateI' stored in Lake Mathews and on June :30, 1961 it hac!
<br />been increased to 115,\174 acre-feet, During the year the storage
<br />varied from a minimum of 55.613 acre-feet on August 1st to a maxi-
<br />mum of 119,25:3 acre-feet on May 23rd, Expansion of Lake
<br />Mathews from its original capacity of 107,000 acre-feet to 182,000
<br />acre-feet was completed on April 7, 1961, Curtailment of storage to
<br />conform to contraetual arrangements with the contractor engaged
<br />in the darn and dike con.-.;t.ruetion and correspunding arrangements
<br />with the State Engineer of Dams during construction of the new
<br />spillway were the only deterrent to storing considerably more water
<br />in the lake before the enrl of the fiscal year,
<br />
<br />Morris Reservoir in Pine Canyon on the San Gabriel River has a '
<br />storage capacity of 35,000 acre-feet. During the fiscal year, storage I;
<br />was maintained in this reservoir at or above elevation 1,130,20 feet
<br />ubove sea level with a minimum of 21,601 acre-feet stored, This is
<br />in accordance with the terms of a contract with the U,S, Navv
<br />which reimburses the District at the rate of $137,00 per day if th~
<br />water elevation in the reservoir is maintained at or above 1.130
<br />feet elevation above sea level. Also Los Angeles County Flood Con-
<br />trol DistJ'ict reimburses the District for storage space in the reser-
<br />voir when the water elevatiou is maintained below elevation 1,152,
<br />
