<br />r <br />[ <br /> <br />~, <br />t <br />~. <br />~. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />3'78;) <br /> <br />~ ". . <br />.. <br /> <br />Board of Directors <br />The Metropolitan Water District <br />of Sllllt.hl'l'lI California <br />Building <br /> <br />October 20, 1~61 <br /> <br />Gentlemen: <br /> <br />There is transmitted herewith the annual report of The Metropol- <br />itan Water District of Southern California for the fiscal year ending <br />Jnne ~O, 1961. <br /> <br />This is the twenty-third annual report issued by the District and <br />the tenth that it has been my privilege to transmit to you as General <br />Manager and Chief Engineer, During these ten years the water <br />deliveries from the aqueduct have increased from 197,208 acre-feet <br />ill 1951-52 to 935,227 acre-feet in 1960-61, the population of the <br />District has increased from 4,000,000 to over 7,500,000, the area <br />included within the District increased from 1,555 square miles to <br />3,976 square miles, and the membership increased from 20 agencies <br />with 28 Directors to 25 agencies with 43 members on the Board of <br />Directors, Since the aqueduct was placed in operation in 1941. it <br />has continued to be operated to meet the increasing demands of the <br />District, and the $220 million expansion program to provide ad- <br />ditional facilities, which was started in 1951-52, was nearing com- <br />pletion. The aqueduct facilities which were completed in 1960 were <br />placed in operation during the fiscal year and the designed capacity <br />of 1,605 cubic feet per second was delivered to the District for the <br />greater part of the year, The enlargement of Lake Mathews from <br />107.000 acre-feet to 182,000 capacity was completed. A total of 216 <br />miles of large diameter distribution lines were added to the s,l'stem <br />during the ten-year period, Under construction but not completed at <br />the end of the fiscal year was the increase in capacity of the filtra- <br />tion plant at La Verne from 200 million gallons a day to 400 million <br />gallons a day and the new 200 million gallons a day filtration plant <br />on the Lower Feeder. <br /> <br />It is a pleasure to render this, my last report, to you and to pre- <br />dict the successful performance of the District operations in the <br />future to meet the water needs of Southern California until supple- <br />mental water is imported from Northern California, While await- <br />ing this supply every effort should be made to replenish the badly <br /><lepleted underground water basins in Los Angeles and Orange <br />Cou nties, <br /> <br />Very truly yonrs, <br /> <br />ROBERT B.
