<br />.' <br /> <br />OOllH3 <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />December 29, 1964 <br /> <br />Discussion Draft <br /> <br />PART 1720 -- PROGRAMS AND OBJECTIVES <br /> <br />\ <br />\ <br /> <br />Subpart 1721 -- Classifications under the Classification & <br />Multiple Use Act -- FL-88-607 <br /> <br />1721.01 <br /> <br />Purpose <br /> <br />These regulations implement the classification features of <br />the Classification and Multiple Use Act, and list criteria <br />to be used in making classifications required by the Act. <br /> <br />1721.1 <br /> <br />General <br /> <br />Section 1 (a) of the Classification and Multiple Use Act of <br />September 19, 1964 (78 Stat. 986) directs the Secretary of <br />the Interior to develop and promulgate regulations contain- <br />ing criteria by which he will determine which of the public <br />lands exclusively administered by B1M shall be disposed of <br />for certain purposes or retained and managed, at least until <br />June 3D, 1969, for certain purposes. Section 1 (b) of that <br />Act directs the Secretary of the Interior to review, as soon <br />as possible, the public lands in light of these criteria to <br />determine which lands shall be classified as suitable for <br />disposal and which lands he considers to contain such values <br />as to make them more suitable for retention and management, <br />This Act, by its own terms (1) is supplemental to the Taylor <br />Grazing Act of 1934 (48 Stat. 1269), (43 USC 3lS-3lSq); <br />(2) does not repeal any existing laws; and (3) does not <br />restrict the Secretary of the Interior from disposing of <br />lands under applicable statutes after the lands have been <br />classified in accordance with the Act. <br /> <br />The claasifications called for by this Act will take some <br />time to complete. . In the interim, all lands administered <br />by the Secretary of. the Interior through the Bureau of'Land <br />Msnagement, will continu~ to be managed under principles of <br />multiple use and sustsined yield of their several products <br />and services. : . <br /> <br />I <br />
