OG~~31

The Colorado Ute Indians also asked that the power line be moved 5
miles ~rther west in northwestern Colorado so as not to cross grazing
lands.
Information meetings with the press and other interested parties
were held to keep them informed of the efforts being made to insure
environmental protection and to obtain comments on the proposals.
The Bureau of Land Management, in its grant of right-of-way over
lands under its jurisdiction, has included the following provisions
relating to environmental protection and control:

Road access--Land surface disturbance will be minimized.

Clea.ring.--Clearing of vegetation from right-of-way and from
access roads will be limited to that necessary to satisfy
safety requirements (construction and operational). Scalping
of top soil and removal of low-growing vegetative COVer will

not be allowed except around structures.

Historic and archaeological values.--Historic or prehistoric ruins

and artifacts are to be identified and salvaged where appro-

priate.
Restoration and cleanup.--All public land areas, where soils and sur-

face materials are disturbed through construction or otherwise

incident to the project operations, will be restored to their

natural state insofar as practicable to the satisfaction of

BLM. Disturbed soil areas which, in the opinion of ELM, are
susceptible to successful reseeding will be reseeded by the

company at its expense.

Sterllants and herbicides.--No soil sterilants or herbicides for

27
