Hunters establish their hunting camp near the river, either
-~. ~
in dispersed areas or in dc\-leoped campgrounds. ~'1ost of the huntillg
occurs outside the proposed \';ild and Scenic River corridor.

Backpacking and Horsepacking. ~!ost of the packing trails are t1,e
hiking trails. The heacI,aters of the Forks are very populat. Camp-
ing occurring at the lakes or area surrounding the Jakes. The DOP1e
Lake trail, being an exception, receives substantial use by back-
packers hyt not by horsepackers.

\\71ile hiking the Dome Lake Trail on August 14th and 15th, our party
observed many backpackers, However, no horse tracks were observed
on the trail indicated it hac!. been several weeks since horses had
used the trail.

.1,4

......

In the author's opInIon, most packers combine their actIvItIes, such
as: enjoying an unique or unusual environment, fishing, hiking,
hunting and viewing outstanding scenery.

Driving. Driving for pleasure occurs in the proposed scenic river
corridor, The North Fork area is popular for those engaged in four
wheel driving. These driving activities account for 2,800 VDS.

Snowmobiling. This activity generally occurs from Hinman Park to
Slavo~ia and from the North Fork to Diamond Park. Present use is
considered to be moderate but is growing each year. The quality
fo this experience is high because of the scenic beauty of this
area.

.'.. ,-

The coming year(1977-78), the Elk River Guest Ranch will be renting
snowmobiles and will be giving guided snowmobile tours along the
Elk River.

Motorcycling, Some motorcycling occurs in the summer'months. It is
of regional importance when the Timberline Enduro is hosted in August
for 300 riders. A section of this event parallels the North Fork
of the Elk, from Seedhouse to Diamond Park.

~lountain Cl imbing. Mountain climbing activities, wi thin the corridor
are very limited due to the rotten nature of the rock.

Canoeing, Kayaking, and RaftinJi.
the present is of low use. Only
high enough to provide a quality

Canoeing, kayaking and rafting at
in the spring is the Elk River
exper ience.

This proposed wild and scenic river is considered to be outstandingly
remarkable from an evaluation of the above recreation activities. It
is determined to be of state and regional importance from a recrea-
tional viewpoint. The use origins are of regional locales. Colorado,
Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, and "ebraska provide the largest proportion
of use.

GLENARD T. ]-!J'.RE
Recreational Forester
