l\)
~
<::>
~

At the urging of the Forum, the Bureau has increased the
priority level of the salinity control program within the

agency so that further delays may be minimized. In order to

expedite the planning studies, the Bureau of Reclamation has

awarded a contract for the feasibility level studies and

report on the Meeker Dome Unit to a consulting engineering
firm, CH2M-Hill,
The combined status report on the Palo Verde Irrigation
District (PVID) Unit, California, and Colorado River Indian
Reservation (CRIR) Unit, Arizona, scheduled for completion
in 1978, is being separated into a status report for PVID
and a concluding report for CRIR at the request of the
Commissioner. USBR studies concluded there was little or

no potential for salinity reduction from water system

improvements in either PVID or CRIR, At present, the CRIR

area is acting as a salt sink and therefore not contributing
to the river's salinity, The estimated release dates are

PVID, 11/79 and CRIR, 10/79.

During the 1979 fiscal year, the level of funding for
the Water Quality Improvement Program was $1,970,000. Funding
for F.Y. 1980 has been set at $2,615,000.
Department of Agriculture (USDA) Program
The Soil Conservation Service (SCS) of USDA has taken

an active role in salinity control activities, During the
year, a representative of the SCS has been appointed to serve

13

,

..i.'_.
