<br />. ,,'j <br />- ;...... t .- <br />i.j'j.' <br /> <br />SOUTH <br /> <br />On May 10, 1962, Governor Edmund G. <br />Brown dedicated the initial reaches of the South <br />Bay Aqueduct. The Governor himself lifted a <br />plank barrier to let the water into the aqueduct <br />and thus initiate the first water deli\.ery of the <br />State Water Project. <br /> <br />The completed portion of the South Bay Aque- <br />duct extends from a temporary intake at the Delta- <br />Mcndota Canal in the San Joaquin Valley to Pat- <br />terson Reservoir on the cast side of Livermore <br />Valley and supplies water for the Alamcda County <br />\Vater District and the Alameda County Flood <br />Control and \Vater Conservation District, Zone <br />7-two of the three public agencies who have <br />contracted for aqueduct water. <br /> <br />The dedication marked the culmination of two <br />and one-half years of construction work and sev- <br />eral months of water service contract negotiations. <br /> <br />The Alameda County Water District serves the <br />bayshore portion of southern Alameda County. <br />Delivery to the district on a sustained basis began <br />June 6, 1962, following improvemcnt by the dis- <br />trict of existing stream channels. The delivery, <br />passing through some 27 miles of natural stream <br />channels in addition to the completed portion of <br />the aqueduct, provides water to lessen an over- <br />draft of the ground water basin. The new water <br />eventually will overcome extensive damage done <br />the basin by intruding sea water and, it is antici- <br />pated, will restore the basin to complete utility. <br /> <br />Continued service from the aqueduct to the Ala- <br />nieda County Flood Control and \Vater Conserva- <br />tion District began on July 7, following comple- <br />tion by the district of a water treatment plant at <br />Patterson Reservoir. From the treatment plant, the <br />water is delivered to Livermore Valley to provide <br />the supplement presently required to insure con- <br />tinued development in the area. <br /> <br />The completed South Bay Aqucduct is sched- <br />uled to deliver water to Airpoint Reservoir near <br />i\'lilpitas in Santa Clara County by December 1964. <br /> <br />10 <br /> <br />BAY <br /> <br />The facilities now in operation will provide for <br />interim delivery of water from the Delta-l\1endota <br />Canal until water is available from the main Cali- <br />fornia Aqueduct in 1967. <br /> <br />These facilities consist of an interim intake <br />canal, an interim pumping plant, and the Bethany <br />Forebay Dam (completed i\Iarch 1961 at a cost <br />of $1,022,000); the South Bay Pumping Plant <br />(completed June 1962 at a cost of $869,000); and <br />a $3,180,000 reach of aqueduct extending from the <br />South Bay Pumping Plant through Patterson <br />Reservoir and consisting of the Brushy Creek Pipe- <br />line (Stage I), the Dyer Canal, the Altamont Pipe- <br />line, the Livetmote Vallev Canal, and the reser- <br />voir, located 4 Y, miles east of Livermore. <br /> <br />The facilities operate in the following manner: <br />\Vater from the Delta-l\1endota Canal, a Bureau <br />of Reclamation feature, passes through a turnout <br />to the interim intake canal, a two-mile-long earth <br />canal with a capacity of 150 cubic feet a second, <br />and thence to the interim pumping plant. The in- <br />stalled capacity of this plant is 50 cubic feet a sec- <br />ond with provision to enlarge the capacity to 150 <br />cubic feet a second. This pumping plant lifts the <br />water about 50 feet and deposits it in Bethany <br />Forebay. <br />The foreba)', which will become a portion of <br />the California Aqueduct, supplies water to the <br />South Bay Pumping Plant, presently operating <br />with an installed capacity of 45 cubic feet per sec- <br />ond but planned with room for the addition of <br />pumps ro increase its capacity to 120 cubic feet <br />per second. An adjacent pumping plant (capacity <br />180 cfs) will be constructed when demand for <br />water from the aqueduct makes the addition nec- <br />essary. The facilities thus cventually will have a <br />joint capacity of 300 cubic feet per second. The <br />South Bay Pumping Plant was completed in June <br />1962 at a contract cost of $869,000. It provides the <br />major lift of the conveyance system, pumping <br />water through a steel pipeline (capacity 120 cfs) <br />
