",",.'"1'\".

3

100 bodies of water within the State. Supplemental warmwater fish
and fish eggs must be obtained from other sources.

Colorado's fish production fad 1 ities are continuously being ex-
panded within the limits of State funds. Unfortunately, ~he need
for hatchery fish to stock Federal reservoi rs I such as Narrows
Reservoir, is Increasing faster than funds and Federal assistance
to meet these needs.

The fish production site which has been investigated by the Colorado
Division of Game, Fish and Parks would consist of about 120 acres
located just downstream of ~he proposed Narrows Dam in Section 17,
18, and 20, Range 58 West, Township 4 North. The hatchery site lies
within the proposed project takeline on lands within the area re-
quested for recreational development by the National Park Service.
R~cre.a,tional use at the hatchery would be coordinated with and would
be compatible with the recreation plan proposed by the National Park
Service. No additional land would need to be acquired for the
hatchery. The unit would be a combination warmwater and coldwater
hatching and rearing unit which would produce fry and fingerlings
to stock project waters. The entl re output of the unit would be
used in project waters of the Narrows Unit.

Because of geological formations, seepage from Narrows Dam is ex-
pected to be 20 second-feet when the reservoir is at minimum pool
and about 80 second-feet when the reservoir is full. Temperature
of the seep water is expected to be about the same as ground water
in the area, or approximately 550 F. The water quality of several
wells in the area indicates that the water would be suitable for fish
production.

Project plans include the collection of seep water by a series of toe
drains in the dam. A 36-inch drain conduit would collect and dis-
charge the water into a holding tank just downstream of the dam.
Water for the hatchery would be taken from the bottom of the tank via
a pressure pipe capable of carrying 20 second-feet of water with a
20-foot head. An overflow pipe would be installed near the top of
the tank to return surplus water to the river. The pressure pipe
would transport the water from the dam to the aeration pond where it
could be aerated or bypassed to the raceways and rearing ponds.
. Separate pipes would carry water from the aeration pond to the basin
house and to the raceways.

When Narrows Reservoi r is low, it may be necessary to supplement
water draining from the right abutment with water draining from
