D, Pickford on May 25, <br />1949, and approved by Regional Forester John W, Spencer on June 9, 1949, Pickford <br />predicted that, "Withdrawal of the available, operable timber, within this area, from logging <br />would not be felt for many years because of the extensive stands of accessible timber <br />elsewhere on the Forest," He also noted, "" ,the scenery, , ,is superb, It is of the type that <br />draws exclamations from the seasonal traveller and first timer alike," <br /> <br />Early in 1964, prior to passage of the Wilderness Act, public interest in the Mt, Zirkel region <br />was high, This led to a boundary adjustment and subsequent addition of 18,780 acres by <br />Forest Service Chief Edward p, Cliff on July 24, 1964, The "Dome Peak" portion of the <br />name was dropped and the new Mt, Zirkel Wild Area totaled 72,180 acres of National <br />Forest land with no privately-owned tracts inside the boundary, Subsequent technical <br />mapping corrections have changed the reported size to 72,4 72 acres, <br /> <br />Passage of the Wilderness Act on September 3, 1964, resulted in the automatic <br />incorporation of the Wild Area into the National Wilderness Preservation System as the Mt, <br />Zirkel Wilderness, Over 40 years have passed since the first Forest Service action was taken <br />to provide wilderness-type management for this outstanding area which has remained, in the <br />words of Pickford's report, ". , ,a matchless spot, , , ," <br /> <br />H <br />if <br />,I <br /> <br />/j <br />Ii <br /> <br />fj <br />II <br />
