<br />I' ;. <br /> <br />DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE <br /> <br />...... <br />'j. <br /> <br />'J <br /> <br />The United States Department of Agriculture has a wide interest <br />in water and related land resources development in the Missouri <br />River Basin in several major areas. These are: broad comprehensive <br />Type I planning; cooperating with state agencies in developing state <br />water plans in Type IV studies for river basins as part of the basin <br />within states; administering the Watershed Protection and Flood Pre- <br />vention Program (PL 566); directing the Resource Conservation and <br />Development Program (PL 87-703 as amended); planning and managing <br />Lnnd and water resources for watershed protection on National Fores t <br />lands and National Grasslands administered by the Forest Service and <br />on privately-owned lands throughout the basin; forest, range, and <br />watershed research; agricultural aspects of water and related land <br />resources research; in providing financial assistance, both loans <br />and grants to small towns and rural areas for development of their <br />water and sewer systems and water facilities and to farmers for <br />developing irrigation water supplies and systems and for livestock <br />water; and in evaluation of and determination of social and economic <br />impacts of planned and functioning water and related land resources <br />programs . <br /> <br />'. <br /> <br />Type I Studies <br /> <br />Leadership for the Department of Agriculture in developing the <br />Type I Comprehensive Plan for the Missouri River Basin, now being <br />published, is provided by the USDA River Basin Planning Staff head- <br />quartered in Lincoln, Nebraska. The staff is composed of repre- <br />sentatives from the Forest Service, Economic Research Service and <br />the Soil Conservation Service with assistance as required from <br />other USDA agencies. Planning activity has been carried out in <br />cooperation with state and federal agencies and coordinated by the <br />Standing Committee of MBIAC.
