'.

0:1878

it could have been used much more efficiently if applied at the time it
was needed. Details are shown in the following table:

Project diversion requirement
Project d1versions:
To meet crop requirements
Winter diversions
In excess of crop requirements (in Irrigation Season)
Total
Apparent shortage (61,200 - 37,300)

61,200

37,300
9,300
6.600
53,200
23,900

Since there are no substantial new water supplies available, improve-
ment in the supply for the Trinidad area must be accomplished by increas-
ing the efficiency of the existing supplies. The dominant factor of the
project o]1eration is, therefore, 1mprOlling the _tel' use efficiency.

The water use efficiency is improved by:

1. Lim1ting irrigation to 19,717 acres.
2. Limiting Diversions and Reservoir releases to the
crop requirements.
3. When water is available in the reservoir all water
rights would be exercised for the benefit of all
irrigated lands.
4. Priority of use as between water rights would be
exercised only when the project water supply is
exhausted.

In this manner, flows historically diverted in excess of crop requirements
and most winter flows may be stored in Trinidad Reservoir under the trans-
ferred Model storage right.

An inventory of the water supplies wi tb and without the project is
given in the following summary:

Summary of Project Operation Studies

Water supply available above project
Project return flows
Total
Irrigation
Irrigation & Stock water
Stock water with project
Evaporation Trinidad Reservoir
Total diversions
In River below Project

Historic
63,600
18,800
82,400

53,200

53,200 53,200
29,200

Water supply above project
Water in River below project
Project depletion (Including evaporation)

63,600
2,,200
3 ,400

5

Future
With Project
63,600
19,400
83,000

51,100

1,500
1,100
53,700

53,700
29,300

63,600
2~.300
3 ,300
