This, in turn, is followed by a comparison and evaluation

of the various budgets. Finally, aonetary and non-monetary evaluations

of the various corner management alternatives are made.

The appendix 1 consists of a summary table of problems and net

returns. Appendix 2 consists of a set of 26-1977 center pivot and corner

budgets and six budgets representing 1974. The system of analysis used

for evaluating center pivot corners for wildlife habitat in the Colorado

Rio Grande Type IV River Basin Study is presented in appendix 3. Due to

the timeliness of the study, the year 1974 was established as a data

base year. The economics of center pivot irrigation and es,pecially

corner irrigation shifted between 1974 and 1977, mainly due to higher

costs and lower prices, but the analysis is presented in the appendix

in order to describe the procedures used.

Description of the Study Area

The study area consists of entire or parts of nine cotmties in

south central Colorado .botmded by the Rocky Motmtains and the Continental

Divide on the west, Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range on the east and the

state of New Mexico on the south. Elevations range from 7,500 feet on

the valley floor to over 14,000 feet on the mountain peaks. The valley

floor is relatively flat and is characterized by a low rise which divides

the Rio Grande drainage area from the Closed Basin. Winters are extremely

cold and the growing season is short.

The state and private non-urban portion of the study area comprises

about 2.4 million acres. Irrigated land comprises about 610,000 acres,

- 5 -
