the dam site. At present, the streets, utilities, housing, and other neces-
sary buildings have been completed or are nearly completed. By January,
all Bureau of Reclamation personnel will be living at Dutch John in the
portion of the townsite set aside for such purposes.

Construction began at Navajo Dam site late in July, following
award of the prime contract in June 1958. Prior to that time, the precon-
struction surveys had been completed, including the location and testing of
the borrow areas where the 30,000,000 cubic yards of earth materials will
be obtained. Also, a contract was negotiated for construction by the State
of New Mexico of a lO-mile long access highway, to the dam site. That
highway is now completed and in use.

The Bureau of Reclamation office for the Navajo Unit is located
at Farmington, New Mexico, but a field camp with 15 temporary houses
has been built near the dam site.

The Curecanti Unit on the Gunnison River was authorized by Public
Law 485. But as you know, construction can not be undertaken until an addi-
tional feasibility analysis is completed for an altered plan necessitated by
certain limitations em bodied in the authorizing legislation.

in the

Public Law 485 authorized
Upper Colorado River Basin.

construction of
They follow:

11 participating projects

In Colorado - Paonia, Smith Fork, Silt, Florida, and Pine
Ri ve r Extension projects.

In New Mexico - Hammond Project.

In Wyoming - Seedskadee, Lyman, and LaBarge projects.

In Utah - Central Utah and Emery County projects.

Immediately following authorization, we contacted the appropriate
agencies of each of the four Upper Basin States, and agreement was reached
to give priority for advance planning and construction to the paonia Project
in Colorado, the Hammond Project in New Mexico, the Seedskadee Project
in Wyoming, and the Ve rnal Unit of the Central Utah Project in Utah.

In conclusion, construction ort the Upper Colorado River Basin
storage units is progressing well and on schedule.

*****)~*

- 19 -
