Derby's recommendations were adopted, and the following year,
1851, saw the beginning of a regular freighter service on the river by
George A. Johnson. Subsequently, in 1857, Lieutenant Ives was ordered
to explore the Colorado to determine the absolute head of navigation.

So much for some of the highlights of the Corps' early interest in

the Colorado River.

Supplementing reports given to you in years past, I want to bring
you up to date by giving a brief report on our activities during the past
year.

1. Pine Canyon and Mathews Canyon Dams in Nevada are now
completed and in operation. These two structures will provide an appre-
ciable degree of protection to properties subject to flood damage in Meadow
Valley Wash and lower Muddy River, including 84 miles of main-line track
of the Union Pacific railroad.

2. Construction of Painted Rock Dam on the Gila River in Arizona
is on schedule and is about 35 percent complete. Closure of the dam is
now expected in April 1959 and completion in June 1960.

3. A draft of the General Design Memorandum has been completed
on Whitlow Ranch Dam on Queen Creek in Arizona. Construction of this
dam is presently scheduled for advertising early in 1959 with completion
tentatively scheduled for the fall of 1960.

4. We hope to have planning funds made available in the near future
to enable us to resum e our planning for construction of Alamo Dam on the
Bill Williams River in Arizona.

5. We have nine flood-control investigations funded in the Colorado
River Basin this year. These are on (a) Las Vegas Wash, Nevada, (b),
Animas River, Colorado and New Mexico, (c) Colorado River and Tribu-
taries above Lee Ferry, Arizona, (d) Dolores River, Colorado, (e) Gila
River below Painted Rock Reservoir, Arizona, (f) Pinal Creek and Tribu-
taries, Arizona, (g) New River, Arizona, (h) Santa Rosa Wash, Arizona,
and (i) Little Colorado River at Winslow, Arizona.

6. We are actively cooperating with the Bureau of Reclamation,
the Soil Conservation Service., and the Bureau of Land Management on their
studies in the basin. Particular emphasis is being placed on our studies of
flood control aspects of the Colorado River Storage Project in the upper
basin.

We fully expect our future interests in the Colorado River Basin
to prove greater than our past or present activities.
