\

t
J

.

.'

collection and includes the measurement of wells, seepage runs on
streams, conducting pumping tests, inventory of wells, and the
collection of chemical quality samples of ground water.

A program is being developed for automatically processing
water-level and pumpage data.

A new project in the metropc, litan area of Denver ~las initiated
in August. It involves studies of small I~atersheds in urban areas
in cooperation with the Inter-County Regional Planning commission.
The overall program includes participation by the consulting firm
of Wright-McLaughlin Engineers, who are responsible for producing
a manual on urban drainage design. The first year's effort by
the Geological survey will be largely one of establishing a net-
l'lork of streamflO\~ stations on small urban watersheds.

Another new project was initiated with the Air Force Academy.
The purpose will be to replace a well abandoned because of reduced
yield. The Survey will select the site and supervise the drill-
ing. The Pueblo Ordnance Depot has asked for a more extensive
appraiswl of the water supply. The project will involve test
drilling to determine where water is most readily available. A
sinilar project is nearing completion in the vicinity of RO~{y
!-lountain National Park Headquarters. The Headquarters is in need
of an increased water supply particularly during the summer months.

Of particular significance is the development of a new tech-
ni1l<O for estimating the effects of "Iell ~lithdra"lals on the deple-
ti.C.1 o[ streamflo'~. The method was developed by one of our senior
engineers, l.tt. Clifford T. Jenkins. It ~Iill permit the ready
computation of the effects of any well or group of wells on the
depletion of the rate of flow or volume of flow in streams such
as the Arkansas River valley. Our ne,:t step is to prepare a map
for the Arkansas valley which ~lill facilitiate the application of
this method in that area. I.Ir. Jenkins' nel'l technique is the sub-
ject of a journal article for the National Water Well Association
and will be available to the general public within a few months.

1184

2

copied: CWCB/lk 8/22/67
