Merritt Farms has reached their $100,000
maximum for cost/share assistance. The management practices
are in the process of being applied.

This was one of the first contracts completed in the McElmo
Creek salinity unit. At that time landowners were aware of
the fact that if they signed up for the program they could
gain higher priority if they said they would improve or
develop wildlife or wetland habitat. Many did so with the
, intention of declining to develop or improve habitat during
the planning process. No provisions were in place at the
time to re-prioritize these cooperators if they declined, so
planning continued and the contracts were approved. Such is
the case with this contract. Since structural practices
were not acceptable to the producer we attempted to use
management aS,a way to replace wetland values lost.

This particular property contained extensive wetland
resources already either supported by canal seepage or
irrigation. It was our goal to develop a management scheme
to optimize the nesting value of as many of these wetlands
as possible. Our primary effort was to defer grazing these
areas during the nesting season (April 1 and July 15). This
has only been partially achieved. We are also seeing a slow
drying of some of these wetlands due to the Lone Pine Canal
rehabilitation and re-alignment.
