Introduction

Height and length of Narrows Dam will be
reduced, gross storage in Narrows Reservoir will
be cut by 509,000 acre-feet, and amount of land to
be purchased for the project will be trimmed by
about 24 percent.

These are some of the major changes in the project
outlined in the 'Bureau of Reclamation's "Draft
Supplement to the Final Environmental State-
ment" to be issued this summer. A "Draft Adden-
dum No.2 to the Definite Plan Report" will also be
issued. The draft addendum and supplement
present the current plan for the Narrows Unit and
summarizes the findings of nearly 1'/2 years of
intensive preconstruction activity.

Completion of these activities and issuance of the
draft addendum and supplement mean, in essence,
that Reclamation is prepared to resume construc-
tion of the project if and when construction
funding is appropriated by Congress and ap-
propriate contracts or agreements are executed
with water users and State entities.

Artist's concept of Narrows Dam and Reservoir.

Narrows Unit

Colorado

No.3 July, 1983

A task force of Reclamation and Fish and Wildlife
Service representatives has also been formed to
propose ways to reduce impacts of the project on
the habitat of the endangered whooping crane in
Nebraska.

Reclamation and the State of Colorado have had
informal discussions concerning sharing of pro-
ject costs. Cost sharing negotiations will intensify
this summer.

Background

The Narrows Unit was reauthorized for construc-
tion and operation in 1970. The project will provide
water for supplemental irrigation, M&I (municipal
and industrial) uses, recreation, and fish' and
wildlife conservation and enhancement.

In addition, the project will alleviate flooding in
the South Platte River valley below Narrows Dam.

Work began in 1976, but was stopped the following
year when Federal funding was halted.

, Work resumed in 1982 when Congress directed
that, with available funding, the 'Secretary ready
the project for construction. In response, $500,000
in Reclamation's budget was transferred to the
Narrows Unit so that preconstruction work could
get underway. An additional $500,000 was made
available by Congress in 1983 to complete this
activity.

Narrows Dam and Spillway

Narrows Dam will be a zoned earthfill structure
located 7 miles northwest of Fort Morgan. The
service spillway will have two 25-foot-wide radial
gates and have a capacity of 42,500 ft3/S. An
auxiliary spillway will operate only during major
floods.

Department of the Interior . Bureau of Reclamation

\
