Colorado.
BLM transferred $50.000 in salinity funds to BaR for plugging saline water wells in the Aneth,
Utah, area. The money is targeted for the Aneth Day School Well, No. N35. The well was
reportedly dynamited. This was one of the wells that was identified in a presentation by David
Naftz to the Salinity Forum in 1996. There are a lot of unknowns about this well. and an
attempt will be made to plug it. Any leftover money will be used for plugging other saline wells
in the Aneth area. BaR administers the contract, and BLM develops the plugging requirements
and provides technical expertise. Water quality measurements were taken in April 1997 and
indicated 8800 ppm TDS for approximately 60 gpm of flow.

Burlington Resources has agreed to re-enter and plug the Navajo lA well. This well is also
identified in the Naftz (1996) report (known as the N46). SoutWand Royalty drilled the well in
1963, and Burlington Resources subsequently acquired the leases. Water quality measurements
conducted on this well in April 1997 indicated 5900 ppm TDS for a flow of approximately 60
gpm.

Within the Socorro Resource Area, erosion control structures were installed in the upper
watershed area of the Little Colorado River in the Largo-Agua Fria Watershed on Escodida
Creek (90 structures) and in Little Blanco Canyon of the Fence Lake watershed (2 structures).

Also in Socorro, pipelines were installed for water improvements to implement Best
Management Practices related to two grazing allotment plans in the upper Little Colorado River
watershed.

Nevada

During FY 97, four additional detention basins were completed under the Clark County
Regional Flood Control Master Plan, three in the Las Vegas area, and one near Laughlin,
Nevada. Although the primary objective of these facilities is to minimize the loss of life and
property, their installation has resulted in an undetermined reduction of dissolved solids entering
the Las Vegas Wash and Lake Mead.

One hundred forty-five burros were removed from the Gold Butte Herd Management Area in
FY 97 under the FY 95 National Park Service plan to reduce the number of animals at Lake
Mead by 82 percent. Some reduction in salt loading to Lake Mead is anticipated from the
reduction.

During FY 97, grazing restrictions imposed by the Desert Tortoise Biological Opinions of 1991
and 1994 remained in place. These restrictions within the Las Vegas District affect 17 grazing
allotments containing 141,000 acres of highly saline soils tributary to the Colorado Grazing
reductions prescribed in FY 95 on the Wilson Creek Allotment remained in place during FY 97.
The prescription will be reevaluated in FY 98.

In FY 97, a tamarisk removal project was completed on 6 acres in Hiko Wash, located
approximately 6 miles above the Colorado River.
