C. BYDRo-SALDlITY KOIIITORDlG i BVALUATIOII SI'lBS:

The McElmo Creek Monitoring & Evaluation Plan was
established in August 1988. It was intended at that time
that monitoring would consist of 8 sites. It has since been
scaled down to 3-5 sites with the intent of moving the sites
as the M&E program progresses. The major activities
comprising the monitoring program are as follows:

1. Measure surface inflow including storm runoff water
entering the monitored field and precipitation falling into
the area.

2. Measure surface outflow from the field.

3. Collect meteorological data to estimate
evapotranspiration (ET) requirements of vegetation growing
within the area.

4. Measure soil moisture content at strategic times to
assess seasonal changes.

5. Monitor throughout the project area the length of
existing earth ditches replaced by pipeline or ditch lining.

6. Monitor throughout the project area the number of
acres directly benefitted by installation of salinity
control practices.

All conclusions will be based on evaluation of
cumulative summaries of data collected throughout each
session. Irrigation data will be subjected to the following
analysis:

1. Inflow minus outflow equals infiltration.

2. Infiltration minus ET minus change in soil moisture
equals deep percolation.

3. Deep percolation minus estimated ditch seepage
equals the effect of onfarm irrigation.

Effects monitored within the 5 fields will be reduced
to unit values per acre for assessing the effects of the
practices applied throughout the project area. Seasonal
results will be cumulatively added annually and unit values
revised for use in revising cumulative effects on a project-
wide basis.

cct(j1.~
