Water-level measurements made prior to the 1975 irrigation season in about
3,300 wells in Colorado are published in a new report released by the U.S.
Geological Survey. The report includes data from wells included in a
statewide network of observation wells which is cooperatively funded by
the Colorado Division of Water Resources and the U.S. Geological Survey.
Measurements made during the 4 preceding years are included to indicate
rising or declining water levels for all wells where previous information
is available. A brief discussion of ground-water trends for six areas of
Co10rado--the lower Arkansas River valley, upper Black Squirrel Creek
basin, Northern High Plains, Piceance basin, San Luis Valley, and South
Platte River valley is also included.

Water levels are directly related to the amount of ground water in storage.
This report provides a basis for estimating changes in quantity of stored
ground water. The report will help managers, well owners, and others in
water-use planning.

The report, Colorado Water Resources Basic-Data Release No. 37, "Water-
level records for Colorado, 1971-75," was compiled by Thomas J. Major,
Lynda Kerbs, and Robert D. Penley. It is the latest in a series reporting
hydrologic data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation
with the Colorado Department of Natural Resources--Division of Water
Resources, State Engineer; Colorado Water Conservation Board; and other
Federal, State, and municipal agencies.

Copies of the report may be obtained from the Office of the Director,
Colorado Water Conservation Board, 102 Columbine Building, 1845 Sherman
~o~~et, Denver, Colorado 80203. There is a $3.00 mailing and handling fee.
