..... <:.it r;,!l tv ~J.:;~ CHAPTER II GRAND VALLEY RIVER BUDGET determined from the records of the water districts, and non-agricultural vegetative consumptions were found by making assumptiona as to their relationahip to crop consumption. In 1969. Colorado State University conducted a very extensive survey of all the lands within the Grand Valley hydrologic boundaries. Their survey accounted for all acreage including that. of farmsteads, residential lawns, industrial lands, and non-agricultural consumers such as cottonwoods, greasewood, and sagebrush. In 1973. the Bureau of Reclamation did another survey of the agricultural lands. The small differences between the two surveys were attributed to the natural variation between the season to season cropping patterns. These cropping patterns were applied to Walker's Budget .<.:.- in the 1974. 1975. and 1976 water years for the original internal river analysis.!! ~;;~~) Two recent. events have affected the consumptive use in the valley. The. first is the elimination of sugar beets in 1976. and the second is the tremendous residential growth in t~e eastern end of the valley in. the last ten years. To account for the removal of sugar beets. the Reed Wash.Study Area was surveyed in 1980. This information was used to develop a post sugar beet crop distribution for the entire valley which was applied to the years 1977 through 1980. To account for residential and commercial growth, zoning maps and development filings were obtained from the City-County Development Department of Mesa County. Using the 1969 Colorado State University study as 1/ Walker developed a hydro-salinity budget and applied it to the 1969 water-year in Grand Valley.
