I.Lm,

uniTED STRTES

FOR RELEASE March 30, 1978
CONTACT HINTON/ARCHER 837-4481

neWI ReleG/e

DEPRRTmEnT

OF THE

InTERIOR

BLM ANNOUNCES PUBLIC MEETINGS TO CONSIDER WILDERNESS INVENTORY

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is asking organizations and
individuals to help develop ground rules and guidelines for carrying
out an inventory of potential wilderness areas on pUblic lands managed
by the bureau.

Meetings are to be held April 13 at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. at the
Grand Junction District BLM Office, 764 Horizon Drive, and on April 17
during the same hours in Room 708, Colorado State Bank Building, 1600

Broadway, Denver, and are aimed at getting people's comments and

feelings back to the Director. (370), Bureau of Land Management,

Washington, D.C. 20240 until May 17, 1978.

According to Dale R. Andrus, Colorado State Director of the BLM,

this first step of setting up equitable and acceptable guidelines and

methods for the inventory process will be the key for combining sound

land management with identifying the wilderness resource. Interim

management during the study period will be a focal point throughout
the development of this process while still adhering to the mandates
of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act, the Wilderness Act,
and the needs of the people.
Copies of the draft procedures are available at all State and
District BLM Offices.

- 30 -
