PREFACE

All Federal agencies and all States represented on the AWRBIA
Committee participated in the Work Group on Domestic and Industrial
Water Supply, which has been assigned the task of preparing this
section of the Arkansas, White, and Red River Basins Report. The
contributions of the various State and Federal agencies are noted
in the body of the report. The Corps of Engineers served as
chairman agency of the Work Group.

The majority of data on present municipal water use were ob-
tained as a result of a coo:perative activity of the Public Health
Service and the various State health departments. The majority of
data on present industrial use of water were obtained as a result
of field visits made by engineers of the State health de:partments.
Estimates of future industrial water-su:pply requirements were
coordinated by the Public Health Service. The De:partment of
Commerce supplied statistical information on present and future
populations. Special regional water-requirement surveys were made
by three State universities under contracts with the Bureau of
Reclamation. Information on ground-water conditions and quantity
and chemical quality of surface waters was pre:pared by the
Geological Survey. Cooperative State-Federal reports 'on water
pollution furnished information on sources of pollution and the
general quality of the surface water. These were prepared by the
Public Health Service in cooperation with the State water pollution
control agencies or State health departments. Information on rUFal
domestic water aspects was furnished by the Department of Agricul-
ture. The Bureau of Reclamation and the Corps of Engineers sup-
plied engineering data on multiple-purpose projects. The States
have rendered valuable assistance in carrying out the study.
