,p~ I
t~.~.;:t'
..~:-~~;

....
l\:l
00
tv

art New Page. for These Comm~nts

TECHNICAL CO~SIDERATIONS

3. General con~ents.

The entire Colorado River Water Quality Improvement Program is geared at
salt reduction at Imperial Dam. With the amount" of U.S. bucks involved, I would
like to have the actual ppm value reductions expected upstream of this point. In
other words what ppm value reduction can we anticipate in the Virgin River or Lake
Mead? Will this project change population growth locations?

4. Technical comments

There seems to be a discrepancy as to the location Df the brine evaporation
ponds near Las Vegas Wash. The United States Geological Survey Flood Prone Map shows
that approximately half these ponds are prone to a 100 year flood. According to this
report Corps of Engineers Flood Prone Maps show this area not in the path of a
100 year flood. Ther'e seems to bea contradiction here.

Also to protect the Brine Ponds from occasional flash floods caused by
heavy thunderstorm rainfall, a system of interception channels should be required
to collect and transport the floodflow around the ponds.

Provisions should be made to negate the erosion which will be caused when
the RO treated water re-enters Las Vegas Wash. During construction of the Las Vegas
Wash barrier, some effort to minimize turbidity downstream should be taken.
l~ontinved on reverSe side).

5. Other specific conments~

. All sixteen desalinization projects are upstream of Lake Mead, Lake Mohave,
and Lake Havasu. Taking into consideration evaporation 'rates, percolation rates, and
detention time in these jakes, how long will it take to decrease the salt concentratio
154 ppm at Imperial Dam?

165
