NEVADA 89510

o

May 4, 1976

Mr. Bruce D. Arkell
Planning Coordinator
Governor's Office
Capitol Building, Rm. 45
Carson City, NV. 89701

Dear Mr. Arke11:

Reference is made to SAI NV #76900054, Colorado River Water
Quality Improvement Program. V

The major direct impacts on the State of Nevada would be
the loss of over 400 acres of wildlife habitat that is used by ap-
proximately 130 species of birds, reptiles and mammals. The loss
of return flow credit for 1900-acre feet of water under the Las
Vegas Wash de-salinization plan is preferable to alternate pro-
posa1sto the loss of 18,100-acre feet of water as proposed through
total export and evaporation plan.

There is concern that unless proper steps are taken there
can be. losses of waterfowl, shorebirds, etc. that might inadvertent-
ly utilize the brine ponds for resting, an instance of such occur-
rance would be waterfowl mortalities that have occurred when birds
settled in on the sulfuric acid ponds at Henderson.

The improvements of the water quality flowing into the Las
Vegas Bay is desirable and can promote migrations of spawning
salmonids into the wash. Although the wash offers little potential
for natural spawning, it may offer a trapping and artificial spawn
collecting site.

Sincerely,

.
iffith

161
