A. Moulder, District Engineer,

Ext. 8546

Potable water supplies in the upper Smith Fork drainage
basin are obtained mostly from relatively remote springs on the
west slope of the West Elk Mountains in Gunnison National Forest.
A study of other sources of potable water supplies in the
upper dra.inage basin was completed recently by the U.S. Geological
_ Survey. Results of the study indicate that the Dakota Sandstone,
which underlies the basin, is a potential source of potable water.
In an open-file report prepared for the U.S. National Park
Service, U.S. Geological Survey geologist M. E. Broom suggests
that a test well be drilled at the Crawford Reservoir site to
evaluate the potential supplies in the Dakota Sandstone.
The report, entitled "Sources of Potable Water Supplies
for the U.S. National Park Service Recreation Area, Crawford
Dam and Reservoir Site, Delta County, Colorado, II may be examined
in the following offices of the Survey: Room 1242-G, General
Services Admin:ls tration Building, washington, D.
