c;r,
~
~

,PPf, I ,. vn~J Ii R!Y'
~l, I ~ ~, c~~, I.H,.
, L..., ~fi~J r1: June 1976

I:;

SUMMARY SHEETS

Dominguez Reservoir Project

LOCATION

The Dominguez Reservoir Project would be located in west-central
Colorado in Delta and Mesa Counties.

PURPOSE

The project would be a multipurpose proj ect that could develop water
of the Gunnison River, a major tributary of the Colorado, for hydro-
electric power development, municipal, and industrial use, recreation,
fish and wildlife enhancement, and water quality control.

STATUS

Feasibility investigations were initiated in January 1975 with the
formulation of the multiobjective planning (MOP) team. The team is
currently forl.lulating and selecting the best possible alternatives.
The investigations are scheduled to continue into FY 1978, and will
culminate with publication of a feasibility report.

PLAN

Present investigations are centered around a proposed reservoir on the
Gunnison River, a short distance above its confluence with the Colorado
River and near the city of Grand Jmlction. The reservoir, as now en-
visioned, would be formed by a 177 foot high rolled-earth and rock
fill dam and would have a capacity of about 300,000 acre-feet.

A pump back, peak demand power plant could be constructed on the east
shore of the reservoir, upstream from the dam. A pump back storage
reservoir could be located in Rim Basin (Section 19 Township 3 South
Range 2 East~ The plant could have an installed capacity of up to 1,000
MW depending upon the availability of off peak power for pumping and' in
economically serviceable markets for the generated peaking power. The
pumping-generating unit could be developed in stages to satisfy future
power requirements as they develop.

The construction of the project could provide many other benefits to
the area. The project could provide at least 20,000 acre-feet of
municipal and industrial water for population expansion in the Grand
Junction-Fruita area that might be the result of the oil shale industry
as well as natural growth. The mixing action of the reservoir would
improve the quality ?f the water downstream in the late summer, fall,
and winter months when the natural river flows are lowest and saline
