The Lower Rio Grande Valley (Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr
and Willacy Counties) has severe flooding problems caused by in-
adequate drainage. Flooding can result from stream overflow,
over-application of irrigation waters, or concentrated rainfall
associated with hurricanes (Tables 5 and 6).

Without massive drainage improvement in the Lower Rio Grande
Valley, limited use of productive agricultural land and flooding
damages will continue. Floodplain management and/or structural
controls are necessary to alleviate flood damages in the upper
region of ASA l30S,_and in.AM1~Q2 and 1.303.
.-- - ... --- ~. . --. - ". .- -

Table 5.

Flood Damages From Hurricane "Beulah," 1967

Dollars
County Damage Category (Value at Time of Damage)
Cameron Total $16,404,000
Hidalgo Total $2CJ,700,OOO
Starr Total $ 4,700,000
Wi11acy Agriculture $ 504,000
Urban/Suburban $ 2,296,000
TGrAL $44,604,000

Table 6.

Flood Damages From Hurricane "Fern," 1971

Dollars
County Damage Category (Value at Time of Damage)
Cameron Agriculture $ 447,000
Urban/Suburban $ 40,000
lIiulllgo ^gri CUltUI.O $2,302,000
Ul'll/IlI/:>IIl.urhan $ l!J2,OOO
Starr AI: ri cui turc 11 ,,;lfll ,000
Urban/Suburban 154,000
Willacy Agriculture $ 240,000
UrbaI~1 Suburban $ 830,000
TGrAL $5,553,000
34 ---

I
