2

were correlated to define regional relations of flood magnitude with respect
to frequency of recurrence. Sufficient data are not yet available for defining
these relations for sites having drainage areas less than 150 square miles.
However, flood data are now being collected on 100 smaller streams in Kansas
which will eventually provide the basis for future analyses of frequency of
floods on small areas.

Acknowledgments

This report was prepared as part of a cooperative program for water re-
sources investigations initiated July 1, 1956, between the State Highway Com-
mission of Kansas, Edwin S. Elcock, Bridge Engineer, and the U. S. Geological
Survey. The Kansas Water Resources Board financed the printing as a State
report. The report was prepared in the Topeka district office of the Geological
Survey under the administrative direction of Elwood R. Leeson, District Engi-
neer, and under the immediate direction of L, W. Furness, Chief, Hydrologic
Studies Section. Davis W. Ellis prepared the analyses and text and George W.
Edelen, Jr. supervised the compilation and preparation of gaging-station data.
Valuable assistance was provided by many other employees in the Topeka dis-
trict office.

Acknowledgment is made to the Washington staff of the Geological Survey,
particularly Tate Dalrymple, Chief, Floods Section, who developed the methods
for analyzing frequency of floods and who supervised review of the report, and
to Robert L. Smith, Executive Secretary, Water Resources Board, for valuable
suggestions in regard to the analytical procedures used.

Most of the streamflow data upon which the report is based were collected
by the Geological Survey through cooperati ve programs with the State of Kansas
and other agencies. Acknowledgment is made to the following agencies who
made their records available for this study; the Kansas Highway Commission,
Board of Agriculture, and Historical Society; the Weather Bureau; and the Corps
of Engineers, Department of the Army.
