COPY
0"1
, ' 913

.,
'..'/

MEMORANDUM TO AREA ENGINEER
(Kenneth E. Ireland)

Subject: Homestake Creek Diversion

March 17, 1954

...::".::..t::

....-.;::.
, .,

As requested I have prepared a brief comparison of diversions
from Homestake as this office had planned atone time and as proposed by
Engineer John P. Elliott. The cowparison of water supply is as follows:

U.S.B.R.PlAN

Drainage area (square miles). . . . . .. 32.5
Diversion elevat:.on (feet). . . .. .. lO,OOo,t
nll1nel capa~ity to Lake Fork (cfs). . .. 27~
Reservoir capacity (acre-feet). . . . .. 0
Unit runoff (acre-feet per square mile). 1,120
R1UlOff above diversion (acre-feet). . . . 36,400
Interception losses (acre-feet) . . . . . 14,000
Reservoir evaporation (acre-feet) . . .. 0
Divertible flow (acre-feet) . . . . . . . 22,400

Power generation (avg. annual KWH) . . . .39,000,000

Elliott Plan

29
10, 250t
100
118,000
1,120
32,500
3,900
2,900
25,700

o

'1

, .
."... .

.."...::.....

':""'.~.: .

It was assumed that the Elliott Plan would pass no water to
maintain fish flows below the point of interception.

Elliott Plan

"", ,'.

"i.

As near as can be detennined this plan would provide a 118,000
acre-foot reservoir near the present Homestake Lake and a collection canal
intercepting left bank tributaries to and including French Creek. A unit
runoff of 1,120 acre-feet per square mile was used for the intercepted area.
The unit runoff figure used is the same as used in the Blue-South Platte
Report.

The Homestake Reservoir would control runoff from 15 square miles
and the interception canal would 1i vert water from ab"ut 14 square miles
for a total area of 29 square miles. It was assumed that runoff from the
15 square miles above Homestake Reservoir would be 100 percent divertible
while the tributary fla~s diverted by canals would show a 25 percent loss
due to non-divertible ratio of flaw, canal seepage, etc. Reservoir evapora-
tion was assumed to be 10 percent of the di vertible flaw.

U.S.B.R. Plan

:0:,",;

" .

. .:-:.:~

:.~.-=:-:~:
;./~~;:

This plan wr,uld intercept a total area of 32.5 square miles taking
the Je ft bank tributaries to and including French Creek and extend ing to
Unknavm Creek down the right bank. Unit runoff rate was assumed to be the
same as that shown in the Blue-South Platte Report or 1,120 acre-feet Del'
square mile. Divertible flow and canal and tunnel capacities used wer~
obtained from Fryingpan-Arkansas Project studies. The two di version areas
are quite similar with almost identical unit runoff rates and flow cha~
acteristics. llie divertible flow rate after allowance for non-divertible
flows and probable fish flows would be 690 acre-feet per square mile. A
tunnel of about 275 cis capacity would be required.
