State St., Room 6107 <br />Salt Lake City, UT 84138-1102 <br /> <br />Sound far-fetched? <br /> <br />Federal dam officials believe it <br />could be an easy fix. <br /> <br />Since Glen Canyon Dam was constructed in 1963, water <br />released from the depths of Lake Powell has stayed about 46 <br />degrees, too cold for the chub, now an extremely rare fish <br />listed as endangered in 1967. <br /> <br />Following more than a decade of environmental studies, the <br />U.S. Bureau of Reclamation is calling for an addition to the <br />dam that would draw water from the warmer top of the lake, <br />where temperatures can reach up to 59 degrees. <br /> <br />If the project is approved following a public comment period, <br />construction of the new water intake structures could start next <br />year and be completed by 2002. <br /> <br />The lake would not have to be lowered during construction, <br />said Barry Wirth, a reclamation spokesman. <br /> <br />Once common throughout much of the Colorado River, the <br />humpback chub now is relegated to a few tributaries like the <br />warm, muddy flows of the Little Colorado River.1ts <br />distinctive hump helps it move through river rapids. <br /> <br />But when the chubs move from the tributaries to the main stem <br /> <br />http://www.azcentral.comlnews/0126glencanyon.shtml <br /> <br />Page I of3 <br /> <br />1/26/99 <br />
