Hab i tat qua Ii ty i nc I uded eva I uat i ng the amount
of per-enn i al vegetati ve cover- and avai lab i I i ty of food and hab i tat
diver-sity.

The following habitat types or- conditions wer-e mapped and quantities
measur-ed: agr-icultur-al cr-ops (by kind), saltbr-ush, sagebr-ush,
gr-easewood, tamar-isk, cottonwood, wi I low, mar-sh (by type), and edge
(boundar-ies, field bor-der-s, etc.).

Tota I hab i tat changes due to the on-far-m sa Ii n i ty c:ontr-o I pr-ogr-am wer-e
deter-mined, using a r-atio of habitat change to acr-es tr-eated times the
total acr-eage of agr-icultur-al unit tr-eated.

Data was ana I yzed fo II ow i ng comp I et i on of each samp II ng cyc I e and upon
completion of planned salinity contr-ol.

In 1988, the Final Repor-t entitled, Gr-and Valley Sal initv Contr-ol
Pr-o,iect Monitor-ina and Evaluation Pr-oar-am stated the agr-icultur-al
units wer-e r-emapped thr-ee to five year-s after- installation of planned
pr-actices. This r-epor-t r-epr-esents the completion ,of all data
collection and final analysis for- the wi Idl ife habitat monitor-ing and
evaluation effor-t.

RESULTS

Data compar-ison of habitat change fr-om one year- after- constr-uction to
thr-ee to five year-s after- constr-uction showed the following r-esults.
The second samp ling cyc I e (3-5 year-s after- constr-uc:t i on) began in Ju I y
1987. Table 13 shows the r-esults of data collected dur-ing that sample
per-iod. All 77 agr-icultur-al units had compar-ative data collected.
Cr-opland decr-eased 127.3 acr-es, or- appr-oximately 4.5 per-cent. AI I
other- vegetated habitat types incr-eased 101.6 acr-es or- ar-ound 10.6
per-cent. Most of this incr-ease is attr-ibuted to previously cultivated
cr-opland that was idle at the time this last monitor-ing visit was
made. The major-ity of this Idle cr-opland had gr-own over- to annual and
per-ennial weeds and was classified as annual her-baceous or- per-ennial
her-baceous habitat types.

Discounting the change in habitat types due to idle far-m gr-ound,
this monitor-ing per-iod initially indicates GVSP aci:ivities wer-e
r-esponsible for- an incr-ease in cr-opland of 26.0 acres, a decr-ease in
other- her-baceous habitat types of 36.2 acr-es, and a decr-ease in
wetland by 5.4 acr-es. The activities accounted for a loss of ar-ound
10,124 feet of edge, and a decr-ease in the diver-sity index by 1.0
per-cent.

The thr-ee to five year-s after- constr-uction data indicates ther-e was
some r-ehabi I itation of habitat par-ameter-s that wer-e pr-eviously
r-ecor-ded as lost due to GVSP and CRSC activities. It was estimated

44
